Beej,

Any August 25th that I have traveled the Firehole River corridor, I have seen one, sometimes several, trees on boulders in the river decorated with Christmas ornaments. You have to wonder who takes the responsibility for continuing this longstanding tradition year over year. Somehow, the work always gets done in the middle of the night.

For anyone unfamiliar with this tradition, I was told that it goes back many decades to the year that Yellowstone experienced a freak late August snowstorm on August 25. It was strong enough to render vehicular travel temporarily impossible, and commercial power was disrupted for a time. Thousands of park visitors were stranded in the developed areas around the park. Rather than totally submitting to the weather, plucky park employees decided to celebrate Christmas in August. Stranded visitors were invited to participate in impromptu Christmas caroling, and employees wore the most Christmasy apparel they could come up with. The concessioners have continued the tradition, and smart shoppers can often find killer deals on merchandise in the stores.
