Where are you seeing trip reports? Are you looking up old ones on this site or seeing them on Facebook?
Since I don't know whose trip reports you are reading, and where they are posted, I have no idea if these are from folks who hang out on the roadside with binoculars and scopes, or hikers, who may or may not be going deep into the backcountry.
Generally speaking, it is recommended that anyone leaving the road, and entering the backcountry, carry bear spray. It is cheap insurance, considering the potential cost of an encounter with an aggressive grizzly.
When you speak of not wandering far from the crowd, that raises the question of (1) what crowd, and (2) where.
