On each perch it moved to this great gray owl sat very still, listening for the tell-tale rustling of a small rodent - likely a vole or meadow mouse - moving in the grass below at a frequency humans would not be likely to detect.

Suddenly it heard what it had been waiting for. A swift plunge from the tree branch to the ground nailed it in its strong talons. The owl remained on the ground for a couple of minutes, so we weren't sure exactly what had happened until it pinched its prey in its beak, took one more look around, then lifted off and headed back to the woods, where it likely had hungry owlets waiting for a meal.
