July 1995 Trip Report

We went back to Yellowstone for another weekend of wildlife viewing and park touring. We arrived at Madison Campgrounds on 14 Jul 95. We set up camp, and headed out to Lamar Valley to see if the wolves had been sighted lately and if any grizzlies were around.

We saw a beautiful cinnamon bear with golden highlights down the middle of it's back. It was a year old cub, but it was the prettiest bear I have ever seen. We saw it right before Tower Falls. We also saw a black bear cub just above Tower Falls. We saw two grizzlies in Lamar Valley on a clearing on Specimen Ridge that all the local bear spotters call the Arrowhead.

The wolves were no where in sight and there had been no confirmed sightings in the past two weeks. They had flown the plane and located the pack just on the other side of Specimen Ridge. But they had not and did not come into view while we were there. Previously the pack had moved 20 miles into the park and the rangers did not know if they would see them again for awhile.

All in all we saw three black bears and two grizzlies, we also saw buffalo, a coyote, elk, moose, antelope and bighorn sheep. It was a great trip. Madison Campgrounds is very nice. If you would like any more details, please let me know.
