17 - 19 August 2007 Trip Report

Bear and Wolf Sightings ~ Trip Report ~ by Bill Hamblin

Friday - August 17 thru Sunday – August 19.

Sorry for the late trip report. Zero grizzlies for the whole weekend.

I saw five different black bears on top of Dunraven Pass. Each one of them were climbing trees and eating cones. I talked to Bob Landis who thinks that they are eating last year’s cones, since this year’s haven't opened yet. Sarah, the black sow without any cubs with the two red ear tags was up there and a sow with one coy. I did see the five wolf pups from the Hayden pack (4 grays and 1 black) with an adult from the grizzly overlook on Saturday.

I saw three pups from the Agate pack on Sunday a.m. with a black yearling and a gray adult. The tourist crowd was definitely smaller this weekend, in fact I actually found a campsite at Tower around 6:00 p.m. There were really quiet neighbors. Lamar Valley will be getting crowded now that the pups, (like 12 of them) have finally moved to their mid-summer rendezvous site, behind the bench south of Dorothy's Knoll. The grizzly sow with the four coys was apparently out Friday around 2:00 p.m. right across from the Dunraven/Washburn turnout right at the top of the pass. There was a good rain before I arrived and another one on Saturday about 1:00 p.m. that I slept thru. Anyway the grizzly and cubs were not seen again the whole weekend. Sometimes I think I'm the only one that hasn't seen her yet.
