Trip Report ~ by Bill Hamblin
15 - 17 October 2010
~ October 2010 ~
Friday - 15 October One more trip to Yellowstone, the weather was not bad. I left work a little later but made to Yellowstone in good time. No delays at the road construction between Madison and Norris today. I decided to do Hayden Valley tonight. Nothing up and down the valley until I located the grizzly sow with two coy's in Alum Creek. She was quite a ways back, but OK viewing. Meanwhile lots of people were walking back into Alum Creek about 1/2 mile to a high spot. There was an old bull elk carcass in the grassy bottoms. Just after the sow and two coy's disappeared, two large grizzlies came to the carcass. They were really in good shape and entertained us until dark. I was a little surprised to find Mammoth Campground not full, so I stayed there both nights. Saturday - 16 October It was 36 degrees when I left the campground this morning, but it was only 24 degrees out in Lamar Valley. The wolves were around but not seen today. I did find a lone grizzly high in bear meadow, on the skyline south of Coyote Overlook. Then a little later I found the grizzly with two yearlings in a clearing just east of the bell meadow. Later I spotted a small grizzly north of Coyote Overlook and later another grizzly north of the old picnic area. A little detour this evening with pizza at the K Bar. Sunday - 17 October It was warmer, 41 degrees at Mammoth this morning, and 36 degrees in Lamar. Moving east from Dorothy's Knoll just after daylight, I found a black wolf walking the road heading west. I headed back to Dorothy's and eventually all three of the Lamar Canyon Pack were spotted north of the road. It was foggy this morning, I could see the adults wolves off and on, but only hear the puppies howling from beyond the fog. Other News Reports of the sow with four cubs of the year (coy's) still being seen at Swan Lake Flats. Missed a grizzly Calvin called in on Sunday morning as it crossed the road near Boulder around 10:30 a.m. Friday morning I found two wolf packs in Hayden, the 6 of the Canyon Group were east of the Yellowstone River in their regular place. I also saw seven of a pack listed as 536's group I think, they were near the bull elk carcass west of Alum Creek. The little rain we had for the weekend was nice, and only the really high mountains turned white. |
