40 degrees this morning warming up to 72 degrees. A badger from Wrecker Pullout this evening. The spot of the month and maybe the year came from Wrecker as John B. from Washington watched a elk carcass with two coyotes on it. Soon the coyotes ran off. A mountain lion walked into the carcass just below the Basalt Cliff and fed for 20 minutes. It then casually walked off to the west (all this happened around 2:30 p.m., and I did not get to see it, but John G and Randi from Washington did see it). At 5:30 a.m. I spotted a grizzly sow with two two year old cubs on the bench south of the Institute. At 5:40 a.m. I found a grizzly sow with one coy on the middle ridge of Crystal, but best viewed to the east, I was at Coyote Overlook. At 5:45 a.m. we had a large collared grizzly on the clearing just east of Ski Slope. At 5:50 a.m. we watched a grizzly sow with two yearlings in a long clearing east of A-Z Meadow. At 2:00 p.m. we had a black bear at Rainy Lake (may have been the sow with three cubs, but I did not see them). At 8:00 p.m. a wolf comes to the mountain lion carcass at Wrecker Pullout (John B. guessed the elk died, since the mountain lion opened the carcass up when it found the carcass). At 8:30 p.m. we had a black bear at Wrecker Pullout. At 8:40 p.m. a second uncollared gray wolf of the Junction Butte pack came to the carcass at Wrecker.

Monday - 26 May

40 degrees this morning warming to 72 degrees. Nothing on the carcass at Wrecker at daylight, it appeared well consumed this morning. At 5:55 a.m. the grizzly sow with one coy on the middle ridge in Crystal, high and best viewed from the Lamar Canyon West and later from Lamar Valley, Coyote was good later. At 7:00 a.m. I found a courting pair of grizzlies on Calfee Clearing viewed from the confluence. At 7:05 a.m. the grizzly sow with two two year old cubs in the tree line west of the rendezvous area viewed from the confluence. At 6:15 a.m. we had a dark grizzly north and east of Coyote Overlook. At 6:30 a.m. 911M and the three year old black uncollared wolf from Junction Butte visit the bison carcass south of Picnic (Randi from Washington found the carcass this morning from Coyote, quite a good spotting). I had a THREE DOG DAY today. At 10:00 a.m. we had the grizzly sow with one coy on the middle ridge of Crystal viewed from Lamar Canyon West. At 1:00 p.m. we watched a black bear with two coys on the Specimen Trail viewed from Long Pullout. At 5:15 a.m. we had a grizzly on the bison carcass south east of Hubbard Hill. This is the carcass Randi found, a female bison died trying to give birth. AT 5:20 a.m. I spotted a grizzly north of Hubbard Hill. At 5:25 a.m. I found a grizzly north and east of Hubbard Hill. At 7:30 a.m. wolf 911M and the black female from the Junction Butte pack arrive at the carcass. AT 8:00 a.m. we had a grizzly on the middle ridge of Crystal viewed from Lamar Canyon West. At 10:15 a.m. a grizzly with a skinny behind found a bison calf south and east of Lamar Canyon East. At 10:45 a.m. I found a cinnamon black bear tree line south and west of Picnic area. AT 5:30 p.m. Scarface crosses the road at Hubbard Hill. Friends were at Hubbard Hill watching the carcass, when a car came by hollering bear, yep, Scarface at less than 100 yards coming down and going thru the parked cars at Hubbard. Margaret and Jean jumped into their car and he crossed 25 feet or less from them. I wasn't there, but Margaret found me at Slough Creek and Scarface had crossed the river and was in the river corridor when I arrived to watch him. At 5:35 p.m. we had a black bear low east on Square Meadow. At 5:45 p.m. we watched a black bear in the rendezvous area viewed from Hubbard Hill. AT 7:50 a.m. wolf 890M joins 889F at new bison carcass south and east of Hubbard Hill. 889F is an old Junction Butte wolf and perhaps 890M is her brother. A lot of submissive behavior, but then wagging tails. Both are black and GPS collared so you can see the white "battery pack" on the throat portion of the collar. Both got to eat, then played for a while. Interesting that the female mounted 890M several times, then the bison returned to push them away, but not for long. Both wolves departed going different directions. At 8:15 a.m. I found a grizzly on Calfee. At 9:00 a.m. we had a small grizzly low on Specimen Ridge. At 10:00 a.m. the grizzly sow with one coy on the middle ridge of Crystal viewed from Lamar Canyon West. After visiting Gardiner to stock up, I went to Swan Lake Flats. ~ June 2014 ~

Sunday - 01 June

42 degrees warming up to 65 degrees. I had a fox near the Institute and a fox at the Yellowstone Picnic Area. At 5:06 a.m. I spotted a large grizzly in the road near the exclosure fence. It wanted to cross the road to the south but saw me and ran back to the north. It ran up to the exclosure fence, tried to get thru the fence, then ran around to the west and up the hill and out of sight. AT 5:30 a.m. I found a small grizzly in the clearing west of A-Z Meadow (later out again in A-Z Meadow for lots of people to see). At 5:40 a.m. we had a large grizzly north of Coyote Overlook. At 6:15 a.m. I spotted a grizzly on Calfee digging. At 8:25 a.m. we had a black bear tree line south of Picnic Area. AT 9:50 a.m. we watched a courting pair of grizzlies high south of the Institute. At 10:00 a.m. I found a cinnamon black bear north and east of the Institute (John and Randi from Washington had watched a black bear catch and kill and elk calf yesterday morning). At 10:10 a.m. we had two grizzlies cross clearing north and east of the Institute. I did have a THREE DOG DAY today. At 2:45 p.m. the grizzly with one coy was back on Junction Butte (apparently recrossed the road yesterday morning going to the north. At 7:00 p.m. we had a black bear south and east of Slough Creek. About 7:50 p.m. I witnessed the second best wolf chase in Yellowstone. It started as I spotted a gray uncollared wolf running all out to the west across the river while at Bob's Knob. Jeremy and Jordan, and Margaret and Jean, and Rick and Maureen all had scopes up. The chase went all the way down to the Marge Simpson tree where we noticed that it was chasing an antelope. Then we picked up a second wolf, gray and uncollared. Jeremy recognized them as a male and female yearlings of the Junction Butte Pack. The chase continued back to the east with one wolf still chasing the antelope, while the second lagged way behind. The chase went past the Horizontal Forest where the antelope passed a cow elk, which angered the cow elk who now chased the wolf. Soon after the wolf continued the chase coming our way. They crossed the Slough Creek and then a large pond, then we lost them right in front of the pullout downhill from Bob's Knob. A couple of people were there, it must have been a really close look. The wolf did not get the antelope, but crossed the road to the east and milled around then sat on a rock for a little while. It was great to be in the right spot to see this! At 8:20 p.m. I spotted a grizzly in a low clearing just west of Specimen Ridge.
