June 1st - Sunday

Sunday June 1st. 44 degrees in Silver Gate this morning warming up to the high 60's today out in the park. I watched my first mountain goat kid of the year today. The red-tailed hawk nest across from Lamar Canyon East Pullout has one chick in the nest. Two moose in Soda Butte Valley were seen today. At 5:55 a.m. Michael O found the grizzly sow with two yearlings in Bear Meadow. At 6:00 a.m. Gary G found the grizzly sow with two yearlings north of the Institute. At 6:25 a.m. Gary G found the grizzly sow with three two-year-old cubs north of Picnic Pullout. At 6:30 a.m. Gary G pointed out a fifth grizzly in the area, a medium sized grizzly digging only seventy-five yards under the sow with three cubs. At 7:20 a.m. a cinnamon black bear was viewed on # 3 finger on Norris. At 8:00 a.m. Kerri O found the second set of grizzlies with two yearlings in the Bowl. Both the Specimen Ridge and Middle Ridge sow both with two yearlings were in view. The sow with two yearlings to the north is the Institute grizzly family. Today was the first day we viewed all three families on the same day. At 11:30 a.m. I found a black bear high on the # 1 finger on Norris. At 2:30 p.m. we had a cinnamon black bear on # 4 finger on Norris with at least two cubs of the year. At 5:00 p.m. Paul H found the two sub adult grizzlies digging in K-3 Meadow. At 5:20 p.m. I found a courting pair of grizzlies on Norris viewed from the Confluence. At 5:40 p.m. Gary G found two separate sub adults digging in the Bowl. At 7:30 p.m. we had a small colorful grizzly digging on the # 3 finger on Norris.

June 2nd - Monday

Monday June 2nd. 46 degrees this morning in Silver Gate warming up to 61 degrees out in the park. Early rain and low clouds hampered the bear viewing in places this morning. I had a cow moose with one yearling today in Soda Butte Valley. I watched bighorn sheep ewes with lambs this morning. I spotted a moose near Round Prairie and a cow moose with a new calf near the campground tonight. At 5:35 a.m. Gary G found a large grizzly in the Bowl. At 5:40 a.m. Gary G found the two sub adult grizzlies also digging in the Bowl. At 5:45 a.m. Hunter G, Silver Gate Guides, found a large grizzly in the old Druid rendezvous area, which proceeded to travel to the west for good viewing this side of the tree line. At 5:50 a.m. I found the grizzly with two yearlings on the top of A-Z Meadow. At 6:15 a.m. I found the grizzly sow with three large two-year-old cubs north of Picnic Pullout. At 6:45 a.m. Gary G found the grizzly sow with two yearlings' high northeast of Pebble Creek (the Pebble Creek family). At 6:50 a.m. Gary G found a cinnamon black bear high to the south of # 1 finger on Norris. At 8:00 a.m. I found the Ski Slope grizzly sow with one yearling on Ski Slope. At 9:40 a.m. we had a black bear viewed under the snow cornices southwest of Footbridge Pullout. At 11:30 a.m. I found the grizzly sow with three cubs of the year high south on # 3 finger on Norris. At 11:50 a.m. Gary G found the two sub adult grizzlies digging in the K-3 Meadow. At 2:00 p.m. Paul H found a cinnamon black bear high on the # 1 finger on Norris. At 5:45 p.m. I found a black bear high northwest of the Institute. At 6:00 p.m. Gary G found a medium sized colorful grizzly digging in the Bowl.

37 degrees in Silver Gate this morning warming up to 61 degrees out in the park. I had a pine marten cross the road in front of me on my way into the park around 5:05 this morning. I had a fox and several coyotes but no wolves today. We had two harlequin ducks resting on the large boulder at the Footbridge this afternoon. At 5:30 a.m. we found a black bear in the Bear Meadow. At 5:35 a.m. the Ski Slope grizzly sow with one yearling was in view this side of the tree line east of Amethyst Bench. At 5:40 a.m. we had a colorful grizzly traveling near the tree line west of Chalcedony Fan. At 6:00 a.m. Blake M found the grizzly sow with three cubs of the year high south on # 3 finger on Norris. In view quite a few times today. At 6:25 a.m. Gary G found a colorful grizzly on the #2 finger on Norris. At 6:35 a.m. I found a small colorful grizzly digging in the K-3 Meadow. At 7:00 a.m. I had a brief sighting of a grizzly on the skyline north of Picnic, most of my friends arrived too late to see this grizzly. At 7:25 a.m. Gary G found a colorful grizzly digging in the Bowl. At 8:30 a.m. Randi M found a grizzly near the Ski Slope sow and yearling on Ski Slope. The sow watched the small grizzly but did not run it off and appeared to be comfortable with the other grizzly close to them. At 9:00 a.m. I found a large dark grizzly on the top of the Ski Slope traveling to the west. At 9:45 a.m. Terri W found the grizzly sow with three two-year-old cubs to the north of the Institute. They were in view a long time and lots of people got to see them. This family stayed pretty close to each other so all four can be seen in the scope at the same time. At 10:50 a.m. Randi M found a tall grizzly in a long snowbank near the skyline. It traveled to the east then up and over the hill and out of sight. At 11:15 a.m. we had a large cinnamon black bear near the skyline above Bear Meadow. At 6:50 p.m. Gary G found the Pebble Creek grizzly family with two yearlings' high northeast of Pebble Creek viewed from Footbridge (four miles plus, but with the sun behind us pretty good viewing, showed lots of people the family). At 6:55 p.m. we had two separate black bears in the same clearing but spread out from the grizzly family.

37 degrees this morning warming up to the mid 60's out in the park. We had a golden eagle perched in a tree near the Footbridge this morning. I watched a large bull moose tonight on my way back to Silver Gate at Warm Springs. At 5:20 a.m. Gary G found the two sub adults in the Bowl, they spent almost thirty minutes wrestling and playing together before getting back to digging for breakfast. At 5:40 a.m. Terri W found a grizzly family with two yearlings on the first large clearing behind Ski Slope; my guess is that this was the Specimen Ridge grizzly family. At 5:50 a.m. Randi M found a black bear sow with one cinnamon yearling on the second clearing south and behind Ski Slope. At 6:10 a.m. Gary G spotted a grizzly on Norris from Picnic Pullout; it was in view for quite a while. At 6:30 a.m. Mark and Carol R called with the Ski Slope grizzly sow with one yearling in the tree line south of Trashcan Pullout. Later they were seen climbing up a meadow heading back to Ski Slope. At 6:35 a.m. Gary G found a dark grizzly digging on Calfee. At 6:45 a.m. Doug M called with the grizzly sow with three cubs of the year again high on # 3 finger on Norris. They were in and out of sight most of the morning. At 7:15 a.m. Gary G found the Pebble Creek grizzly family, sow with two yearlings' northeast of Pebble Creek viewed from Footbridge Pullout. The light was poor, so later I went east to the Soda Butte Midpoint and watched them. Closer and the sun was now more behind than in front so viewing much better. Earlier this morning Cara M found a grizzly on the # 4 finger on Norris. A brief sighting and I questioned whether a cinnamon black bear or a grizzly. Well later a small colorful grizzly was seen less than a hundred yards from the grizzly sow with three cubs of the year. I should not have questioned Cara; she was right it was a grizzly. At 9:50 a.m. we had a black bear sow with one cub of the year on Amethyst Bench. Today the sow was quite a distance from the tree line, which could be a problem if either a grizzly or wolves caught them that far away from the trees. However, the sow kept the cub close and soon returned to the safety of the tree line. At 12:00 noon I found a black bear sow with one cub of the year in the K-3 Meadow. At 4:30 p.m. we had a nice brown, black bear just off the road east of Soda Butte Picnic area. At 4:45 p.m. we had a cinnamon black bear just off the road west of Soda Butte Picnic area. At 4:50 p.m. a bear jam at Round Prairie as a cinnamon black bear sow with three cinnamon yearling cubs were just across the creek. At 5:40 p.m. I found a colorful grizzly digging north of the Institute. At 5:45 p.m. a black bear also seen high north of the Institute. At 6:00 p.m. Blake M found a colorful grizzly in a high clearing east of the Bell. At 6:10 p.m. Gary G found a small cinnamon black bear grazing in A-Z Meadow.
