June 21st - Saturday

45 degrees in Silver Gate this morning warming up to 64 degrees out in the park. I watched a cow moose in downtown Silver Gate this evening. At 4:50 a.m. Gary G found a dark grizzly digging on Amethyst Bench. At 4:55 a.m. Paul H found a grizzly near the old bison carcass south of the Institute. At 4:55 a.m. Gary G found a dark grizzly south of Hubbard Hill moving to the west. At 5:30 a.m. I found a colorful grizzly on the east flank of Ski Slope. At 6:00 a.m. I found the grizzly sow with one yearling cub (Ski Slope family) above the snow cornice southwest of Footbridge Pullout. At 6:25 a.m. Kate J, Silver Gate Guides, told us of a grizzly sow with two yearlings (Middle Ridge family) digging in No Bear Meadow. At 6:30 a.m. a limping black wolf viewed near the old bison carcass south of the Institute. At 8:15 a.m. Gary G found the grizzly sow with two yearling cubs (Institute family) northeast of Lamar Canyon East Pullout. At 9:30 a.m. Randi M found the grizzly sow with three two-year-old cubs north of Coyote Overlook. At 11:00 a.m. Randi M found a dark grizzly digging on Penny Lane. At 12:30 p.m. Randi M found a small colorful grizzly in the Bowl. At 4:25 p.m. we had a dark grizzly with a Yellowstone Strip in the second skyline clearing east of Penny Lane.

June 22nd - Sunday

They closed the Beartooth Highway last night. 37 degrees in Silver Gate and snow on my car (but not sticking on the road) this morning warming up all the way to 42 degrees out in the park. The light rain ended in the morning, but the low clouds remained most of the day. Low clouds mean that the high clearings cannot be seen, and most of the grizzlies we are seeing are in the high clearings. There were a few different foxes just inside the park from the NE Entrance. Unfortunately, people feed the foxes to get a better picture. The fox just inside the entrance is really smart, one day bringing one young kit with her to beg for food. It is illegal to feed any animals in Yellowstone National Park. At 7:00 a.m. a guide called with a small grizzly in view from near Confluence East. When I arrived, the grizzly had disappeared. I went to Confluence and found the grizzly running south through an opening in the willows. At 7:15 a.m. I climbed up X closure Hill to see if I could find the small grizzly. I did not, however, I found a large grizzly walking along the tree line east of Chalcedony Fan. A long view but quite a few people got to see the grizzly on a very slow day for wildlife viewing. At 1:30 a.m. I found a large grizzly digging and traveling north of the Institute. The clouds came down to allow about a thirty-minute viewing of the grizzly.

36 degrees this morning in Silver Gate warming up to a nice 64 degrees out in the park. I had a THREE DOG DAY today. Gary G found a bull moose this morning on K Meadow. At 5:00 a.m. Hunter G, Silver Gate Guides, had a large grizzly cross the road in front of him near Midpoint Pullout in Lamar Valley. We could see the grizzly as it approached the river and for a long time as it moved slowly west all the way to Amethyst Bench. At 5:40 a.m. I found a black and a cinnamon black bear low in Bear Meadow. At 5:50 a.m. I found a grizzly digging on Penny Lane. At 6:00 a.m. I found a grizzly on the # 2 finger on Norris. At 7:00 a.m. I found a grizzly sow with two yearling cubs (Middle Ridge family) on Bear Meadow. They were only in view for ten or so minutes before moving fast up and over and out of sight going west. At 7:15 a.m. I found a grizzly sow with two yearlings (Specimen Ridge family) on the meadow behind Bear Meadow. They eventually moved to Bear Meadow and later to the east and out of sight, good viewing a couple of times today. At 7:45 a.m. five black and two gray wolves (others counted seven blacks and two grays) on the east end of Jasper Bench. They were bedded for a long time this morning. At 8:40 a.m. Randi M found a new family for us this morning; a grizzly sow with two yearling cubs northeast of Druid Peak on the southern flank viewed from Lamar Canyon East. Paul H and I had viewed them on June 21st but were uncertain of where we were looking. They were in the same clearing moving south as with the sighting on the 21st. At 10:40 a.m. I found what turned out to be the grizzly sow with three two-year-old cubs (Druid Peak family). As sometimes we see this family, it starts with one grizzly, then two, then three and finally all four. They were high north of Picnic and only seeing all of them moving through gaps in the trees. At 11:50 a.m. I found a colorful grizzly just under and south of the snow cornice. At 12:05 p.m. Randi M found a small colorful grizzly on the #1 finger on Norris. At 12:10 p.m. Paul H found a pretty medium sized cinnamon black bear moving around Dead Puppy Hill viewed from Footbridge Pullout. At 7:00 p.m. I had a courting pair of black bears, a large one following the small one, about one mile west of Warm Creek.

29 cold degrees this morning in Lamar Valley warming up to the mid 60's out in the park this afternoon. Gary G found a bull moose just above Square Meadow this morning, a strange place for a bull moose. I had a THREE DOG DAY today. At 5:50 a.m. I found the colorful grizzly again today on the # 2 finger on Norris. At 8:30 a.m. from Lamar Canyon East while looking for grizzlies I found three black Junction Butte wolves bedded high northeast of Coyote Overlook. Later a gray wolf was with them as they got up traveling west and out of sight going into Secret Passage. At 8:50 a.m. I watched with others two black and one gray wolf on a two-day old carcass just across the river southeast of Coyote Overlook. At 9:30 a.m. I found a grizzly sow with two yearling cubs (Institute family) north of the Institute. Today they were high in a saddle between two higher hills. Good viewing several times this morning in the same clearing. At 10:30 a.m. Gary G found a pair of sub adult grizzlies on K-3 Meadow. At 10:35 a.m. Gary G showed me a medium sized grizzly with a Yellowstone Stripe digging on # 2 finger on Norris. At 12:55 p.m. I was in a black bear jam near Ice Box Canyon; it was ten or more minutes as every car wanted a picture. At 3:45 p.m. we had a cinnamon black bear in the reclamation area just outside of Cooke City. At 4:45 p.m. we had a black bear viewed near the Pebble Creek Campground. At 6:35 p.m. Gary G found the grizzly sow with three two-year-old cubs (Druid Peak family) briefly north of Hubbard Hill.
