September 1st - Monday

Monday Labor Day September 1st. I left Idaho Falls mid-morning traveling through the park to camp north of Gardiner this evening. Traffic was good going through the park with most of the traffic heading out of the park the other way. There is a seven-mile construction project that slowed traffic down to twenty-five miles per hour. It got up to 85 degrees north of the park this afternoon. I watched a lot of grizzlies this evening north of the park. Five different grizzly families were in view (a sow with three cubs of the year, three families with two yearlings each, and a pair of large sub adult grizzlies. In addition, I had seven individual grizzlies.

September 2nd - Tuesday

48 degrees this morning north of the park warming up to 86 degrees in Yellowstone Park this afternoon. I watched grizzlies again north of the park this morning. The same five grizzly families were in view: one sow with three cubs of the year, three sows with two yearlings each, and a pair of large sub adult grizzlies. In addition, I had five individual grizzles. I headed into the park in the early morning. They are repaving the area of the Tower Gas Station as well as the road from the gas station following the road going to Lamar Valley ending east of Yellowstone Picnic Area. I found two foxes today but no bears or wolves.

September 3rd - Wednesday

42 degrees this morning in Silver Gate warming up to 86 degrees out in the park in the afternoon. I had three foxes today but did not find a coyote. They are resurfacing the two pullouts in the Soda Butte Valley. They are also adding fill to the shoulders on the pavement. Some delays. A little smoke in the air today. At 6:30 a.m. seven black (mostly pups) and one gray Junction Butte wolf seen down near the Marge Simpson Tree in Slough Creek today. At 7:25 a.m. Hunter G, Silver Gate Guides, called with three grizzlies in Lamar Valley. A large dark grizzly was originally on the Amethyst Bench but when I arrived it was walking to the east. It took its time and was in view for well over an hour. At 7:45 a.m. Evan S, Yellowstone Wildlife, pointed out the grizzly sow with one yearling cub (Ski Slope family) on Ski Slope. From 9:25 a.m. through 10:25 a.m. we watched a grizzly Gary G had located grazing at the Confluence. After a while it decided to cross the road to the north. We both lines of traffic stopped in the road, it took the grizzly three attempts to get across the road. Local watchers called for people to stay in their cars, and finally enough did allowing the grizzly to get across the road.

September 4th - Thursday

Very smokey today in the park. It is really bad looking into the sun so viewing the high clearings was challenging. I had a THREE DOG DAY today. At 7:15 a.m. Hunter G, Silver Gate Guides, called with a grizzly in view south of the Confluence traveling to the east. It was across the Lamar River and went east until it ran into hikers going out the Lamar River Trail. It ran up and over Dead Puppy Hill and out of sight. At 9:25 a.m. I hiked up Dave's Hill at Slough Creek and watched two black wolves, probably pups, bedded south of the Marge Simpson Tree. The wolf watchers’ count was higher as more wolves were in view earlier. This is the Junction Butte rendezvous area, and the pups have been in this area for weeks. At 9:30 a.m. I found a cinnamon black bear sow with one limping black cub going into the Diagonal Forest at Slough Creek.
