Expedition Yellowstone

Summary: Expedition Yellowstone is a multi-day, curriculum-based program that gives 4th grade students an immersive learning experience in the park. Led by National Park Service educators, students explore Yellowstone natural and cultural history through hikes, field investigations, and hands-on activities. Held at Lamar Buffalo Ranch in fall and spring and the Youth Conservation Corps campus in winter, this program inspires stewardship while meeting classroom learning goals.

Through Expedition Yellowstone the National Park Service offers a 4-5 day curriculum-based program for teachers and their 4-8th grade classes. Established in 1986, this program operates in mid-February through May, and September through mid-December. The program has two campuses: the historic Lamar Buffalo Ranch (used during spring and fall), and the Youth Conservation Corps facility (used during winter). The program operates on a fee basis to cover faculty salaries and instructional supplies used by students. A staff of rangers with varied education backgrounds instruct these expeditions to the park.

Expedition Yellowstone teaches students about the natural and cultural history of Yellowstone National Park, investigates current issues affecting the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and promotes stewardship and preservation in the park and in home communities. Emphasis is on learning through direct experience in the outdoors. Students participate with teachers and parent chaperones in hikes, field investigations, discussions, creative dramatics, and journal writing. The program coordinator works with teachers to tailor an itinerary for the group that best meets their educational needs.

Yellowstone National Park is part of the Outdoor Schools national network that works with schools, youth groups, families and the National Park Service to immerse students in the nature and culture of the National Parks. These Outdoor Schools provide multi-day education programs throughout the year, in all kinds of weather, every day and night, to inspire students through education, experience and leadership development.
