Monday - April 22nd

40 degrees in Gardiner but 35 degrees at Slough Creek this morning warming up to a nice 62 degrees. At 6:30 a.m. three blacks and two gray Junction Butte wolves were seen around the Slough Creek Den. At 6:20 p.m. I found a grizzly sow with one yearling cub on the backside of Specimen Ridge viewed from Elk Creek. Long viewing but the light was good. They both were digging. The sow has a distinct Yellowstone stripe around her mid-section. At 6:50 a.m. I found a grizzly digging south and west in the Black Tail Plateau viewed from the Nature Trail.

Tuesday - April 23rd

42 degrees in Gardiner but 38 degrees at Slough Creek in the morning warming up to 60 degrees. Two moose were seen south of the Soda Butte Cone this morning. Also, three moose were in Round Prairie this morning. I had an eight ungulate day today (hoofed animals, there are eight species in the park: moose, bison, elk, pronghorn antelope, white tailed deer, mule deer, big horned sheep, and mountain goats). At 6:25 a.m. 907F and a black wolf were seen at the Slough Creek den. 907F the alpha female is now in the Sage Den. 969F is no longer in the den. At 7:45 a.m. the un-collared black yearling of the Lamar Canyon pack was chewing on an old bison head in Round Prairie. The wolf later moved west and was seen in the Soda Butte Valley near the river corridor. At 8:45 a.m. Bruce P found a grizzly sow with one two-year-old cub on the #3 finger on Norris. The sow is quite dark for a sow and the two-year-old is light brown. They were both digging for something to eat and were in view until 12:50 p.m. At 10:30 a.m. Kim C found a black bear above #9's old den on the south west of Little America. At 4:40 p.m. Melba C found a black bear west of Hellroaring Creek from Upper Hellroaring Pullout.

Wednesday - April 24th

46 degrees in Gardiner and 37 degrees at Slough Creek in the morning warming up to 57 degrees. I found a moose south of the Soda Butte Cone this morning. Another moose was seen bedded south of Soda Butte East pullout. Three bull moose and one cow moose were seen in Round Prairie this morning. At 6:25 a.m. one black wolf was seen near the Slough Creek Den. More wolves were seen later, but I moved into Lamar Valley this morning. At 7:45 a.m. I believe wolf 1118F formerly of the Mollies wolf pack was seen at Round Prairie. She has separated from the Mollies and has a really bad right front leg. At 8:05 a.m. I found the grizzly sow with one two-year-old cub on the #2 finger on Norris. They were digging a really big hole this morning then later lightly dug for things to eat. They were in view for a long time again this morning and were bedded tonight at 5:45 p.m. still in #2 finger. At 11:3 a.m. Bruce P found a grizzly near Amethyst Creek. It soon moved down into Amethyst Bench for a long session of digging until almost 2:00 p.m. It then ran quickly east and disappeared south of Picnic Pullout. At 4:50 p.m. tonight the same bear was seen south of Picnic Pullout moving farther to the east.

Thursday - April 25th

32 degrees in Gardiner and 26 degrees at Slough Creek this morning warming up to a windy but pleasant 60 degrees. I had three moose south and east of Footbridge Pullout this morning. One vulture soaring over the Institute this afternoon. At 6:25 a.m. 907F the gray alpha female of the Junction Butte wolf pack came out of the den and was greeted by a black pup. At 6:40 a.m. I found a grizzly in the tree line behind Amethyst Bench from Coyote Overlook. This grizzly was in no hurry standing up on his back legs and scratching several trees. Then it scratched on several other trees while standing on all four legs. At 2:35 p.m. the grizzly was back in view above the Amethyst Bench. At 10:20 a.m. John G found the grizzly sow with one two-year-old cub still on Finger #2 in Soda Butte Valley. The best views were from the Soda Butte East Pullout this morning. Both were digging another large hole and then went to lighter digging while still in view. At 3:05 p.m. John G found the grizzly sow with one yearling on the southern end of Specimen Ridge viewed from Lamar Canyon West. Both were digging for something to eat.
