~ March 2022 ~
Friday - March 25th
41 degrees in Idaho Falls but warming up to 55 degrees today on the Northern Range of Yellowstone National Park. I left Idaho Falls at 7:00 a.m. and made it to Gardiner, Montana around noon. Good roads all the way. I had a moose in Island Park. Lots of elk and pronghorn antelope, a few mule deer, four bald eagles and one golden eagle on the trip to the park. Quite a few mountain bluebirds near Elk Creek today. The Junction Butte wolf pack was in view most of the afternoon today. They have fifteen members now since 1228F a gray left the pack and found a black male to couple with. Nine blacks and six greys make up the pack but today 1339M a gray male was not with the pack so only fourteen viewed with nine blacks and five grays.
Saturday - March 26th
37 degrees leaving Gardiner this morning warming up to a warm 63 degrees. I found a fox on the slopes of Hellroaring, a coyote south of the Institute, and the Junction Butte wolves were again in view today with fourteen wolves again (nine black and five gray) as I had my THREE DOG DAY. The black bear sow with the green ear tag was poking her head out of the den hole today viewed from the Petrified Tree Pullout. At 3:30 p.m. I found a black bear sleeping eighty yards east of the Fish Den on Granet Hill viewed from Elk Creek. I returned later and the bear had disappeared, maybe it has cubs of the year and are too small to come out yet, or maybe it was a single black bear.
Sunday - March 27th
38 degrees in Gardiner warming up to 59 degrees in Lamar Valley this afternoon. I had another THREE DOG DAY today. I took some time to look at the two bald eagle nests I know about. The one across the river from Coyote Overlook in Lamar Valley had no eagles around. The one north of the pullout just east of Long Pullout in Little America had both parents in the area. At 8:30 a.m. I arrived at Slough Creek bathroom where the Junction Butte wolves were high in Crystal Drainage to the south. They had viewed the same fourteen wolves as the last two days, nine black and five grey. Only three greys and two blacks were in view when I arrived. Around 1:00 p.m. I spent some time at the Petrified Tree Pullout and got to see the black bear sow and one of the cubs at the den entrance.
Monday - March 28th
Monday March 28th. 46 degrees in Gardiner this morning warming up to a breezy 66 degrees this afternoon out in the park. I started my day at Blacktail Ponds which is rumored to have three or four small bison carcasses under the water. About 6:20 a.m. we detected a black spot moving around and as it got lighter was a nice sized grizzly bear slowly moving north away from the road. Good viewing for about twenty minutes. At 8:00 a.m. the black bear sow with the green ear tag was at the entrance to the den viewed from the Petrified Tree Pullout. At 9:15 a.m. 1228F and her black male partner were found in Round Prairie but when I arrived they were already in the Soda Butte Valley heading west. At Footbridge they found two large elk (bulls who lost their antlers) being chased by 1228F. Others said she had one of the elk down, but it recovered. The chase continued all the way into the Lamar River Corridor. The black male did not join 1228F, I think it was too close to the road for him. Later they both were seen again so the hunt was not successful.
